My most recent purchase was a boardgame called Gheos. It is a tile laying game in which you and your opponents (up to 4 players) play petty gods trying to gain majority stake in a civilization while causing grief on the other civilizations that you have very little stake in.
Basically you put down a triangular tile that has a drawing of a landmass. After putting down a tile, you can either place a new civilization if you made a new continent or gain more followers of a pre-existing civilization.
There are three ways to score. One is turn in one of your 3 chips that each player starts off with, another is through building temples, and the third is during each epoch.
The game has a high "screw you" factor. Your objective is to gain as much influence you can among the various civilization and the ones you can't, you destroy by either forcing that civilization to migrate to another continent that is already occupied by a civilization, trap them on an island, or cause a war between 2 civilzation. The land is constantly changing due to each player having the option to lay a new tile on a new location or replacing a tile that was already placed.
Best of all, this game takes less than an hour!
I've played this several times now in a 2 player and 3 player games and each game was extremely fun and close. The game mechanics are fairly simple although you'll probably miss a rule or two during your first couple of games.
Hope you guys give it a try.

Less than an hour? My wife might be interested in that. I can't get her to play my favorite board games because they take too long...=)

Yes! I was surprised to find another boardgame that plays under an hour.
Shannon from rpg.net has a review of it already. Also, if you go to Boardgamesgeek.com, you'll find bunch of reviews and play sessions.
I saw this at my FLGS and read on the box that it could be played under an hour. Went online to check what others thought of the game and bought within a week.
In a 2 player game, you and your wife will have more time to strategize. It's not as dangerous to take total control of a civilization and expand it's borders. With an increase in players, there is an increase in interaction, and therefore putting everything in one basket becomes a major risk (backing up one civilization). In the 3 player game (sadly never got a chance yet to play 4 player game) I have played, there were very little strategizing and more thinking tactically since the board was constantly being reshaped.
Some of the highlights from several games were:
1. My friend used deception like a pro. He would get the other players to back one of the civ more heavily than him, only to destroy that civ. We were like lemmings being led to a cliff...
2. In a 2 player game, my friend and I were building up our civ, only mine was being groomed for war. He was cashing on his chips and getting tons of points while I bid my time and slowly grew my continent to reach his. War ensued, his civ was wiped out and I cashed in my chips eventually edging out a win.
3. In a 3 player game, that same friend from ex#1 managed to connect his continent with a civ to mine and another opponent with their respective civs. He managed to wipe both of our civs out.
I think you and your wife will enjoy it (if she doesn't mind the screw factor).
What kind of boardgames are you into? How about your wife?

She doesn't MIND it, but she's not very evil at heart.
I dig all kinds of games, but my favorites include Betrayal at House on the Hill and Runebound. The wife and I are also both Life freaks.
We plays more card games than we do board games, actually...namely Munchkin and Chez Geek.
I am definitely going to give this game a closer look.

I tried out Runebound. It's OK. The big problem for me was the time it took for my turn to come up again. I haven't tried the 2nd ed or the expansions so it may have improved.
I personally go for anything that has a chess like feel to it. I have NightMare Chess 1 and 2, Navia Drytp (could never spell that game....), and I used to have a 3 player chess that I gave away to a friend in college. I am thinking about getting into DreamBlade but unfortunately it is a collectible game not to mention it has random elements to it which I'm not too keen on.
My friend is a Munchkin freak. He has all the expansions and we would like to try them all. Unfortunately, the game needs 3 players so we haven't had much chance to play it.
A friend of mine introduced me to a card game called "Jambo". If not for my friend, I would passed on this excellent 2 player game. Before I bought Gheos, I used to put this on the table at my FLGS whenever it was just me and one other person.
