Got a chance to play this in an official storyline tournament today. The tournament was booster draft. I enjoy booster draft and sealed deck games more than constructed due to everyone being on equal footing.
I gravitate towards games with a war theme and I found one in CCG format. It harkens back to the days when CCGs were complicated and the rulebook was a book. As Magic is compared to chess, L5R is compared to a game of Go.
One of the unique aspect of L5R is the storyline tournaments where you try to advance your particuliar clan above all others.

Ya know, after reading up on the newest card set: Khan's Defiance (which also made me wanting to run my L5R rpg campaign again) I am really thinking of getting into the card game. Because of this storyline.

I hope the FLGS you frequent (if at all) has L5R players you can play with.
In college, there were over 10 of us who reguliarly played in a FLGS. I believe, I participated in like 4 or 5 storyline tournaments. 2 or 3 of those had katana replicas as top prize. It was interesting to participate in one of many participating game stores and having to read the effect it had on the storyline.
I even got some people interested in L5R CCG after they saw the cards and the wargamey feel to it.
After around the 2nd or 3rd story arc ended, interest began to wane. I found very few people continued to play it. My friend introduced me to a new FLGS and upon hearing that I played L5R, he asked if I could become a Bouty Hunter and try to revive interest in L5R in his store. I did a couple of demos and got 6 people to invest in it and play regularly. I was worried that it would die when I went overseas. Upon my return, one of the players had taken over and managed to recruit even more.
Yesterday, we had our first storyline tournament for thisyear.
My clan is awesome! Hida Kisada became one of the Fortunes, His son became a god, one became the Oracle of Earth while another became a Dark oracle, and oh yeah, we won the jade champoinship. Crab rocks!
Joining in on a L5R RPG session would be helluva fun though. Guess what clan I would play...

If you are thinking of getting into the card game, wait till the Samurai Ed comes out. That way you can start on an even footing with everyone. Also they may change the wording of some the old cards. The rules have changed a lot. Some for the better and some that I personally disagree with.

If I was to get into it I would wait for the Samurai Edition to come out for sure.

Wow, some of the clan strongholds are awesome!
I joined in a Samurai ed legal tournament playing, you guessed it, CRAB.
I borrowed a deck from a fellow Crab brother and I ended up with 2 wins, 2 loses. His chosen stronghold allowed my crab to destroy an opponent during a battle as a battle action as long as his strength was higher than his opponent's. The one major weakness was if the Crab personality was bowed (tapped in Magic speak), he could not use the stronghold's ability.
One of my memorable opponent was my fellow Crab player who decided to go with the Mantis clan. His stronghold allowed his personalities to reduce an opponent's strength with a ranged attack if the opponent survived. He misjudged his attacks (got a little cocky) and left his provinces wide open for my men to overrun all three of his provinces (he had reduced me to 2 provinces).
The prizes were booster packs and everyone received clan box.
I so love L5R CCG!
