Saw the Gold Ed for $20 at EB this past weekend.
Wow! It mixes several of my interests which only heightened my enjoyment of the game.
It has elements of real history, has civ (the game) like quality, and aspects of RTS.
It has some elements like civ because you can micromanage your settlements. When micromanaging, the game is on turn base mode. The RTS mode comes about in battle.
I really like how detailed battles can become. You can dictate a units formation, the army's formation. You can flank enemy units, use special abilities of units (calvary can use the wedge special ability), ambush, etc.
The diplomacy aspect of the game is so much better than civ (although I'm not sure if Civ IV has improved on that). You can counter bargain and depending on your influence or the standing of your faction (there are 3 Roman factions), it'll effect the outcome of the negotiation. There are even spies and assassins you can hire.
The only thing I don't like is the naval battles. I was hoping they were as detailed as ground units in battle but all you do is click the resolve button when your ship encounters a hostile ship. Boring!
I may pick up Medievel II. I've heard that you can play any European nation and that you can battle it out on the newly discovered Americas. You also have to deal with religion in this game.
Anyway, this game is my newest addiction!

Rome Total War is amazing and the music in that game is very epic!
I recently picked up Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution for the PS3 and that game kicks so much arse! I was playing Cleopatra and was able to build the Manhattan Project and nuke Queen Victoria! I actually felt guilty once I unleashed Hell. Fun game!

I loved the Civ game for the PS despite the awful and somewhat confusing graphics. I regret trading it in...
I still have Civ II installed in my computer and play it occassionally whenever I get the urge.
How are the graphics? is it still crappy?
I had a blast, literally when I was the first to gain the atomic bomb. I nuked several cities. Unfortunately, I hadn't realized the blast radius and ended up killing some of my own forces in the process.

The graphics on the PS3 version of Civ Revolution are awesome! I really like the more cartoonic approach. Lots of fun! Check it out here: www.civilizationrevolution.com/Napolean was a pain in the butt and I quickly got rid of him. LOL!
