How do any of you Narrator's handle your players gaining Edge? Do you assign a point value to it and the players can buy it when they have enough points, or do you advance them when you feel they're ready?
Also, would you allow the team leader to have a lower edge than someone else on the team?

I use the rules in the book for Advancing Edge. --that is player characters after going through significant and life changing adventures may get a change if their player asks for it, I question their justification and if legitimate we advance them.
And yes I think team leaders can be less "experienced" than their teammates--Wolverine may be more experienced than Cyclops, but lets face it Cyclops is more a team coordinator and player.

Okay. What if a player plays his character as more experience, wiser, and one that thinks things through - but at character creation didn't put the extra points (or the 7+ card) into Edge? Would you advance him then?
And what about the opposite - characters who have a higher Edge, but don't show it. Would you take it away?

Well, it depends...
On one hand, Edge isn't entirely roleplaying based...it does have a game mechanic backing it up.
On the other hand, especially on taking Edge away, if they're reckless, careless and downright inept, then yeah, start looking into dropping their Edge.

Well part of edge is knowledge and experience. But not all of it is leadership/wisdom. Someone might be a better experienced fighter and more skilled because of being around longer, but not more wise. Or vice versa. If they're playing wreckless, dangerous, ill thinking lack of forsight character--then yeah, consider dropping it--negative changes are likely and possible and encouraged in the game.
I know players don't like it, and some GM's don't, but it is + or - ...

We use pure mechanics. Spend a point, draw a card. You need as many positive auras as the next edge (so 2 positive auras to get your second edge - spending 1 point to draw).
It was brutal, but the people who bought edge in the beginning get a bit of a head start
