A few of us from the board started up a new board that used SAGA to play a Street Fighter role playing game. I dubbed the game, which is more like an expansion or campaign setting, Street Fighter Hero Adventure Game (SFHAG).
If you were to make a comic book role playing game, the biggest, more important part of the game would be the powers. If you were to make a cinematic, video game style, martial arts role playing game, you would put a lot of attention on the combat system.
And this is where we ran into a roadblock. While trying to keep as much to the original system (MSHAG) as possible, we agree that the fighting system would have to be modified. But how?
One thing we knew is that we didn't want just any character being able to do any move. If you were able to do a Flaming Dragon Punch, this is a move that you worked long and hard to be able to perform. So, we needed to have some sort of system where players would work to get certain moves - and some moves were harder to learn than others.
So, do we approach building this combat system...
1) Adding Punch, Kick, and Grab (and maybe a couple others) as Abilities (like Strength, Agility, Intellect, Willpower)?
2) Adding Punch, Kick, and Grab as Powers?
3) Or some other system?
If we went with 2, the easiest way I could see this being done is by the system of Ultimate Skill - a power that gives skills intensities which add to the total of the action being performed. For example: If you had 2 ranks in Ultimate Skill: Punch, a 3 Strength, and played a 5 of Intellect, you would have a total of 10.
Mysonabsalom believes it should work this way, but you do not add Strength to it. Ultimate Skill replaces Strength. My problem with this is that you are then having to dump twice as many points into this than anyone else. If you had a 3 Strength, your 2 ranks in Punch are useless until you have 4 ranks in Punch, at which time you use your 4 Punch instead of your 3 Strength for Punch attacks. If you have 4 Punch and 3 Strength, you put 7 points into that. Much weaker than the player who just put 7 points into Strength.
What are any of your thoughts on this? We're open to ANY suggestions.
