I am thinking of converting Deadlands' mechanics to that of SAGA. The inspiration came to me while I was reading a thread at RPG.net, forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=295074That place led me to this website: www.portnell.net/bob/games/index.htmlIt has the barebones of the SAGA system with a few modification marrying the 2 SAGA systems. The author used this to play in an L5R setting using this modified SAGA system. It made me rethink trying out SAGA for fantasy type setting. Anyway, like I said, this is a barebones version of SAGA and a lot of minor details are purposefully left out for the GM to fill in the blank (such as roles, races, advantages, and hinderances). I would like to ask any of you that have the DL SAGA, if you are willing to give me an example of a role, race, monster, advantage, and hinderance in SAGA stat form. This would give me a sort of template in which to start. Thanks in advance! If there is interest on this board, I would like to try my hand at running Deadlands here on this website (if permitted) after I have gotten a feel for playing in a PbP and after I have the conversion done.

I am not too knowledgeable of SAGA but would love to help playtest the Deadlands conversion. Just let me know when it is ready and I would give it a whirl.

1) I would also be interested in seeing your notes.
2) Feel free to run your games here. More power to you, friend.

It is going to be a slow process (due to real life) but once I am comfortable with the use of Roles and the Magic System, it should make it easier and fun to convert.
Having read MerelySAGA, I like how the author merged the 2 SAGAs. When I am done, I'll do a trial run here.
Thanks for giving the green light to try the game here.

Week 1.
So I decided to work on the skills first. Looked at Reloaded. None there so I looked over SW. Didn't do it for me. No flavor. Dug out my 1st ed core book and looked at the skills there. Wrote down all the skills from the 2 editions and compared those skills to the ones in MHAG. I decided tp follow the skills in MHAG more closely and ported some of the skills to the appropriate abilities as MHAG defined them. I did change a skill or two around. I got rid of running, moved demolition and disguise to Mind. Added new skills such as bluff and tale-telling.
Not sure as of yet what to do about the ability to perform magic. Do I treat it like a skill or some sort of advantage, maybe for Roles. Speaking of Roles, There will be 4 core ones: Law Dogs, Huckster, Blessed, and Shaman. I'll have to think about Mad Scientist. Then there are several more such as Bounty Hunter, Explorer, Muckrakers I'm thinking of adding.
While looking through the web to see if there were other goodies for SAGA for me to use, I came across Spirit of the Century. I got so distracted with the need to find out more. I found the OGL version in the name of FATE 3.0. I really liked the Aspects. They got the license to do the Dresden Files so I am thinking of waiting to get that RPG instead of SotC (it has rules for magic which SotC doesn't). It's really hard to wait though especially since the softcover is only $30 for over 400 pages.

Agreed on Spirit of the Century. It's my next "must buy" purchase.
Hm.
Good question on how to handle Magic. I'll kick it around in my head for a while.

Man, I would LOVE to see a Deadlands SAGA! While I have never played in the setting, from what I've read of it from the books, it's a fresh, creative take on the setting - much in the way that Shadowrun was for its setting.
I'm short on time right now, but maybe use the magic system that was used in DreamPark: spells do a set amount of damage (or variable by cardplay), and your "intensity" is really more of a counter of how often you can use the spell before your run out for the day. Perhaps a better, yet more intensive system, would be to assign some sort of "spell cost" per spell, with an energy pool like hitpoints, either also based of Edge (as hitpoints are) or based off Willpower.
Unfortunately, I don't know how the Deadlands magic system worked to begin with (didn't they eventually convert it to the D20 system?), but it's a suggestion.
Love to see what comes of this thread!

If only we could work out a schedule for an online game...
Deadlands is probably my second favorite RPG EVER.

While I used to content myself over buying the game books, but not having anyone to play with, it's starting to get old. d**n, I wish we had a teleporter or something so we could get together. I mean, how cool would that be if people like me, you, Sidhain (Tim Kirk - I just love calling him "Sidhain"), Mysonabsolam (or however you spell that), and some of the other MSHAG board legends!

That WOULD be pretty sweet.
But...
Who would run the game? =)

Well, if it were MSHAG, I'd love to see Sidhain run one. He talks a good talk (great, actually), so I'd like to see how it would turn out. ...but if it were Deadlands, as much as I love the setting, I, myself, haven't studied up on the rules enough to run a game. Since you have shown to be the biggest, if not just most outspoken fan, perhaps you would be it.

It would be pretty cool to actually *play* Saga for a change...
But I am SO there for running Deadlands.

Boy, do I know the feeling. Let's see, the last time I really played was... five years ago? Wow. Yeah, about five years ago. But I read the rules or something related to the game about once a month still.

I played...sometime early last year.
Whenever the last time it was I posted about it on here, I think.
