Ok, really though, what is Marvel thinking?? Have they lost their collective minds!? This has to be a bad dream or some alternate reality! (though if it turns out to be such, I will have lost any respect for the company!)

What part about it don't you like? I mean, this is one of the best ideas they've ever had, so I am honestly interrested in what you've gathered from this event so far.
In my opinion, this is exactly what would happen if super powered people really existed here in the real world - but it would have happened at least back in the 80's. I would be surprised if it would have taken up until 2006/2007 for the government to lay down regulations on super-powered people taking the law into their own hands (from both sides of the hero/villain balance).

Maybe I've been away from comics for too long, but it seems like some of the characters are a little too short-sighted and some even going against years of established characterization!
As far as the story goes, the plot, I like it, in fact I'm running a 'regestration' storyline as we speak and it has been going for about a year and a half!
I just wish some of the character were truer to them as I remember them...

I am COMPLETELY with Roman Virtue here.
This is NuMarvel at its worst, and is spitting on years of characterization. About the only things I agree with are Captain America taking a stand against the system and Thing refusing to fight either side, so he up and leaves.

From what I've been told, the storyline is about end! So... there is hope...

Yes...but they have insisted that there's no mind control, secret villain, etc..so that still doesn't change the complete character assassination performed on half the Marvel Universe.

Look, I love continuity as much as anyone - but there was a lot of mess in early days. I can't argue one way or another with how they're portraying character personalities (I think it largely comes down to how the writer views how the character is, personality wise), but as for the general theme that they have been running with, I love it. For the last few years they have been running MASSIVE storylines that break into all their comics, staying true to everything they have been saying and doing before. I love it. From what I can tell, they have kept everything consistant. And many of these changes, to me at least, are what would happen were the Marvel universe real.

So... it looks like Capt. America has been killed... again. "Supposedly" for good this time. So, how long do you think they'll wait until they reveal that he wasn't really dead/ his death was faked/ He died, but was revived/ the person who was shot was a double?
