Yeah, that's a pretty bad way to do it. But I'm not too surprised. I've heard Joe Quesada say many times that he thought having Peter get married was a terrible idea. So, he's finally getting his way to undo it.
But to bring Mephisto into this as a way to save Aunt May? Isn't she used enough? God, if I were Aunt May, I would hate myself - not just for this little instance, but for all the other crap I've made my nephew go through over the years. Hide this from me, save me from this, I'm old...
If all Superman ever did was save Lois Lane, people would start to resent her, saying, "Imagine how good his life would be if he didn't always have her getting in danger and needing saving".
