I want to go and start buying some of these books, but there are too many to know for sure which ones are good and which I could pass on. I know that I need the sourcebook, but beyond that, I'm at a loss.
If anyone is familar with the game, I'd love some advice.

Ok, well the 2e Core book (obviously), then depending of what you want to run there are a couple way to go. If you want to run a game based on their setting, then Freedom City would be the second 'must have'. Personally, I run my own setting (though I still got FC), my personal 'Must Have's' beyond the core book are Masterminds Manual and Ultimate Power! Masterminds Manual gives you the tools and suggestions for personal custimization for the game, as well as rules for playing the game with alternate mechanics, Hit Points (for diehard D&D'ers), and a lot more! Ultimate Power breaks down the powers section of the core book, adding details such as easy-referance charts and a much more understandable explination for creating your own ballanced powers! Not to mention that this 'optional' book is slowly becomming the 'official' book on powers!

Get Freedom City for 2E.
About the only thing I can recommend really.

HaHA! I finally bought the books! Well, sort of. I traded in my old 3.5 D&D books that I never get to use since I moved and got these Mutants & Masterminds books.
So, I got Freedom City, Lockdown, and of course, the Mutants & Masterminds source book. Now just to find the time to sit down and read these!

Great to hear it Trakx! I find the two systems really compatible with just a little tweeking!
Oh and I forgot one 'recomended reading'; The Atomic Think Tank. The message boards are a good place to look for ideas, suggestions or alternate rules ideas, as well as official erreta!
